I have been watching a lot of U.S. TV lately, and it seems to me that many young people use "Correct" as their response to questions rather than what I was used to hearing, for example, "Yes", or "That's right", or even "That's true".

I refer to interviews or spontaneous comments, not scripted programs.

Because the common tendency is to say "Right" or "Wrong." Trouble is, right is also a direction, and can confuse the conversation, esp. if said while driving! So another word that is a synonym to "that answer is right" is substituted: "correct."

I would venture to guess that you are watching scripted U.S. TV shows. This does not necessarily mean that young people in the U.S. are speaking this way. It simply means that writers who work on the shows are scripting them that way.
