with blankets, toys, food, etc. Its not a very small area either. The reason is that he kept peeing all over the house and it has gotten pretty bad. Is it ok for me to put him in the kennel during the day and have him sleep in the apartment at night. I just cant stand the stains all over the house anymore. IS it mean or do alot of people raise their dogs like this. I still walk him everyday and play with him. Also is it ok for him to be whining so much. thanks

Daschund's are people doggies. They crave the nearness of their human companions, much as a child needs its parents. If you are gone during the day, the garage or even a kennel in the house is fine because he would be by himself anyway. However, it is best when you are home that you spend as much time as possible with your little darling. Many weiner dogs whine a considerable amount because they want attention. He shouldn't pee in the house if he is allowed outside frequently. Talk with your vet about it.

By kennel do you mean a plastic or wire dog crate?? Or do you mean an outdoor dog kennel with fencing?? Dachsunds are not a hearty enough breed to keep outside. I think there are some breeds who can tolerate colder temperatures, but in my opnion, I don't like the idea of an outside dog.
That being said, is this dachsund neutered and when was the last time he was to a vet?? Does he have a regular potty routine??How long is he left alone each day?? Is he kept in a dog crate during the day?? Is he marking or is he actually urinating everywhere??

I would take him to the vet to rule out a urinary tract infection. A course of antibiotics will usually clear that right up. A UTI will cause more frequent urination because there is either bacteria in the urine causing irritation or because it hurts to express all his urine at once, hence the frequent potty areas.
Crating your dog during the day will also eliminate him from drinking water just because it's something to do. They need to be placed in a crate that is large enough for them to stand up and turn around. My dog has a blanket and a few toys in her crate. No food or water. She's housebroken, but shes knows that crate time means quiet time. I love crate training and I don't think it is mean. It gives my cats a break and I know it keeps my dog out of trouble!
How often to do you and play and exercise your dog?? And when you are playing with him, is he getting tired out?? Pent up energy can lead to other behaviors that are undesirable. Whining because he is excited to see you is one thing. Does he whine or get anxious when you leave him?? If so, he have some separation anxiety problems which is a behavior that you want to correct as soon as possible!

These dogs were bred solely as indoor pets.

My 18 year old female dog has just started peeing around the house, so I did the next best thing and got a dog crate so that she can remain in the main part of my flat.

So we have now come to an agreement where she is in the crate while I am at home and i take all the dogs out every 4 hours for a pee.

During the week I take all the dogs to work with me and the crate works fine for evenings and weekends

Can you put him in the kitchen or a bathroom for the day? A garage can get cold as many are not insulated or heated. I would worry about him getting too cold in winter or too hot in summer.
Getting a crate is another good idea. Then he can't pee in the house or get into trouble when you are away. Don't get one too big or her will pee in it. Crate training help with house breaking and other training.
