I am a first grade teacher. If you still have time before school gets out for winter break, you can hand your childrens' teachers a brief survey asking them what sort of things they like (i.e., favorite clothing store, favorite scents, any items they collect). Otherwise, I would recommend one of the following:

-- gift certificate (to a teacher supply store, craft store, bookstore, nice clothing store, housewares store, or nearby coffee shop)

-- something consumable (candles, chocolate, bath products, wine -- but be careful with these, because some people are very picky. You may want to ask in advance if the teacher likes a certain thing.)

-- If you have the money or can go in with other parents, a really lavish treat for the teacher -- such a massage, day at a spa, or night at a bed-and-breakfast or timeshare.

-- A handwritten note of appreciation saying what a great job the teacher is doing!

I know it's not very exciting, but I think that the best gifts for teachers are gift cards!

I love getting a gift card. There's only so many candies and candles that a person can deal with. I get CVS gift cards from one family and I always make good use of them!!!!

Can you say Porsche? Seriously, depending upon how much you have, go from something simple like bath oils to a massage. They don't have time or money for those little luxuries.

Gift Cards are good. They can pick out what they want. They prefer it that way.

I would prefer things for my classroom--you have no idea how much of their own money teachers spend on classroom materials.
