Anything organic contains carbon. However, if you want nearly pure carbon, look for diamond. Graphite (the substance in your pencil lead) is a good source of nearly pure carbon, too, and is not nearly as expensive. Coal is mostly carbon, but it contains many impurities.

Carbon is a major component in all organic matter. So animals and plants all contain carbon, as does anything made of plastic. Carbon is added to iron when making steel. It is also found in Carbon dioxide which is in the air. Diamonds are crystalized carbon.

The fizz in soda and beer is often from CO2 under pressure. Burnt wood is carbon from which the other organics have been removed. Sugar has a carbon substrate on which -OH and H- is attached. If you have slate or shale rock, it contains a large amount of carbon.

Carbon is found all around you. It's in our bodies, it's in metals, the sky, and any kind of living organism. Without carbon..you and I would not exist.
