I believe that there should be two words. Pride that is good is respect and appreciation for what you have and what is good. It is gratitude, praising what is awesome, and loving your country and stuff.

But then there is a pride that really really messes you up. It affects your life more than you know.
"It's a vice of which no man in the world is free, which every one in the world loathes when he sees it in someone else. It was through pride that the devil became the devil.

Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind. Nearly all the evils in the world which people put down to greed or selfishness are really far more the result of pride
As long as you are proud you can never know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.
That raises a terrible question. How is it that people who are quite obviously eaten up with pride can say they believe in God and appear to themselves very religious? I am afraid it means they are worshiping an imaginary God. They theoretically admit themselves to be nothing in the presence of this phantom God, but are really all the time imagining how he approves of them and thinks them far better than ordinary people.
Pride is a spiritual cancer. It eats up the very possibility of love, or contentment, or even common sense.
Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble man he will be a sort of greasy, smarmy person, who is always telling you that, of course, he is a nobody. Probably all you will think of him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who tool a real interest in what YOU said to HIM. He will not be thinking about humility, he will not be thinking about himself at all. If anyone would like to acquire humility, I can, I think, tell him the first step: to realise that one is proud. If you think you are not conceited, it means you are very conceited indeed. Once you realize that you too have this problem, you will be able to combat it. Just think how different your life, words, and actions would be without negative pride. It would transform you. Unfortunitely, I don't think it can ever be fully licked. If you figure out how, let me know. It's killing me here. :)

well-placed pride is a virtue, too much pride is a fault.

I think that pride is a fault. I believe in the saying 'Pride cometh before a fall'.

i guess you can look at it both ways. too much pride is a fault, people will think you're too full of yourself. but if you have the right amount of pride, people won't step all over you.
