Get a GPS or GPS based phone/
Carry a compass, available in the old needle form and in various alarm clocks, etc. in digital form. Radio Shack sells a couple. Today, for more money, you can buy accelerometer based directional devices that keep track of your movements.
If you live in the midwest, most of the streets are identified as N. E. S. or W. or follow some rule for dropping the letter so you can get address information (on N. Main, the house numbers increase to the north.)

Without the sun, your best bet is just to memorize some landmarks. Memorize some street names and which way they run, etc.
