I am not what I ought to be;
I am not what I would like to be;
I am not what I hope to be.
But I am not what I once was,
and by the grace of God, I am what I am.
- John Newton (atheist and slaveship captain that accepted God, became a minister and eventually wrote Amazing Grace)

Both.
you can be a coward but pretend to be brave. But truly deep down, you are still a coward though you cover yourself with a lie.
But you can also be brave for trying to cover it up and taking the leap.
We're both. We lie to be something else but sometimes our lies become us.

I take your question to mean, "Can you change?"
Of course you can -- people change in voluntary and involuntary ways all the time. They gain experience or education, or they simply decide to change.
Most people change in small ways, but some people change their fundamental character.
