It beeps to remind me so I wait for that. I think changing once a year was an idea that battery makers thought up. I also test the detector every few months so I know it is OK and its batteries are strong.

Yes, Everyone should remember to change their smoke detector batteries, twice a year, when you change your clocks. In the Spring when you set your clocks ahead for daylight savings time and in the Fall when you set your clocks back. Then you can be sure they will work long enough if needed. Please, Do not wait for them to beep! You want your smoke detectors to have enough life in them to wake you, if there is a fire.

Yes, and I write the year and month on the new battery with a Sharpie.

Once a year. the batteries are still good and I use them in a radio.

Mine are hard wired along with the CO and heat sensors but this is a great reminder!
