Pencil "lead" does not actually contain the metal lead (Pb), it is mostly carbon.

It is used in some types of lead crystal and some forms of pewter, as well as applications that need weight without much need for strength. Formerly it was used as an additive to gasoline.

it isn't used in advanced countries for much of anything anymore because of it's toxic poisoning to kids. But here is info on what it was used for in the past
