Obesity has become a very touchy issue in the US. The American society has giving weight, really low standards. When I was in the Army someone who was considered overweight would be considered normal in civilian standards. Someone who was considered good for there weight and height would be under weight in civilian standards. Its quite sad that they lower the standards to make people feel better.

All these fast food restaurants, like McDonald's and Subway, claim to have healthy food. Have you seen the commercials where it say it has 0 calories or something like that? Well, that's the good news. But the bad news is that all the healthy stuff also have a lot of unhealthy things they don't tell you about, like, for example, 100 grams of fat or a lot of sugar. When they tell you all of the healthy things it contains you don't think about all the unhealthy things it also has in it. Since you are focused on the healthy side of it, you go and get one. But sometimes they are so good that you become an addict of that certain food. All the unhealthy ingredients eventually build up in your body and that makes fat cells, which even if you lose 150 pounds, still don't leave you. That is the main reason that people are obese these days.

The culture in the US today promotes obesity. Fast food is everywhere, it's cheap and convenient, and often a daily part of peoples lives, for several meals daily. In addition, computers and video games are in most of our homes, that encourage people to sit on their behinds. It isn't a conscious decision, just what happens to people who don't think for themselves. Then there's cable/tv.
Kids used to use their imagination to play, and their energy. Before people needed 2 incomes and all of the extra curicular activities kids have, Mom used to prepare the meals. People have become convenience junkies.

For one, most foods in this country are extremely fattening. When you go out to eat at a restaurant, not only are most dishes fattening, but you are given HUGE portions. Plus, eating seems to be a big part of our social network - everyone goes out to lunch or dinner on dates or as a group. Also, people seem to be a lot lazier than they used to be. Many children now sit inside watching television or playing video games rather than going outside and playing.
All of our "modern conveniences" have made us lazy as well.
Being heavy seems to be more acceptable now as so many people are. When I went to school, a chubby person would be ridiculed if they wore the things chubby people are wearing now. Now, however, it seems to be the norm.

These kids have no chance from the start...They are fed Macaroni and cheese and McDonalds 5 days a week, have never heard of vegetables and never set foot outside the door for any activties...It's sooooooo sad to see obese 3,4, 5 yr olds:(:(

it basicly comes down to pure laziness. we have so many resources readily available to us and most people here have no restraint. they think "if one burger is good, 3 burgers and a large fries must be better". And it's not really a stereotype, its a proven fact that america is the fattest nation in the world. did you know that most high schools only require 2 years of P.E. now? its because everyone is lazy

Because everything is accesible from or home or computer. There is no need to get out and excercise. Plus, this is a fast paced culture and since no one has time to sit and cook a nice warm meal, they swing by the local mcdonalds and eat. no excercise+fast food=fat ppl

my guess is that the majority of american cities have at least one fast food restaurant. And it's just to convienient to resist. I try to keep my family off it but yeah i go for the jack-n-the-box or mcdonalds every once in a while.
plus, a lot of americans have cars and don't walk very much.

There are a lot of Americans, and I don't think they want to be over weight.
It just happens, I mean the UK is small compared to the US but if the UK was as big as the US we would have a lot of over weight people as well.
