What sort of routine maintenance should I do to keep my n scale electric train engine running well?

For example, should I put some 3-1 gear oil on the gears through the opening on the bottom? The gears are plastic, and I think it would be okay to put a little of that oil on them, but I'm not sure? Is there anything else I should do to keep it running well?

a very small amount of oil, and run a track cleaner on the rails to keep the contacts in good order
