does it really insure your life? or just that things will go ok after your life?

It is called "Life Insurance" because the insurance company insures you while you are alive.

Once you have died, they pay out the claim for the life insurance policy to your beneficiary.

Yes, the life insurance coverage is intended to help provide financial security so things will go ok for your beneficiary after your life is over.

A name is just a name. Names are used to identify something even if analyzing the reason behind the name itself brings you to a dead end. Think about Indians. Someone descovered America and found Indians there, then the pioneers (who often live in cities like Paris, London and Venice) became (hot dog eating) Americans. It makes no sense. RE: Why do we call life insurance, life insurance? when it pays you for dying. Annuities are really life insurance. They pay you in case you live.

You have car insurance for when anything bad happens to your car. House for your house and so on and so on. Life Insurance if for when something bad happens to your life, like it stopping.
