Turn off the gas to it, vent your house and call the repairman. Yes it is bad to be in an unvented area with propane gas.

Not sure why electric appliances would make a gas odor. Has your wife been using some new cleaning product that might be leaving a residue on surfaces that, when they heat up, is producing the weird smells? Added: There is one other, rather remote, possibility for the wierd odors: The smell is being created by heating appliances (whether they operate by gas or not) and it only happens when said appliances are in use, thus, the formation of the smell seems to require heat but does not require gas; so a gas leak is not likely the cause. I'm thinking maybe there is some kind of gas (other than natural gas or propane) present in your house with a no odor, or a very weak odor, that, when it contacts a hot surface, such as an electric element or stove flame, decomposes to form some another material with a strong odor. Is it possible there was a refrigerator, air conditioner, aerosol can, etc that might have leaked choloro-flourocarbons at your house? These gases often have no odor, but decompose on sufficiently hot surfaces to make nasty smelling breakdown products.

Go outside, and turn the propane off. Then call a service person to look at it. Propane is bad because it is highly flamable and can explode. Just go turn it off, don't panic. By the way, if the valve is running the same direction as the pipe,it is in the on position. If it is crossways, like a cross.it is off.

it's normal to smell a small amount of gas, but if it's significant, yes, go turn off the gas supply to the house. then open your windows and the oven to let the gas dissipate. did you already check the pilot light? if it's out, do not attempt to relight until you have already let the excess gas out of the house. then go turn it back on and relight it. if this is way out of your league, just call a gas or appliance man in the morning.
