Generally it is the larger universities in larger cities that become more recognized internationally. Waterloo has a permanent population of only about 100,000 so it does not get the international attention of a city such as Toronto.

Waterloo is a fine science school -- but is hardly the top university in Canada. According to the following rankings, it doesn't even make the top ten.
