Starter... he has been a starter his entire career. He packs 4 devestating pitches which are about 2-3 more than a reliever needs so it would be a waste to put him in the pen. As a short term answer until he matures sure. If he struggles next year I would put him back in the 8th inning. However his long term value is as a starter. He's lucky to be able to do both however and could eventually replace Mo. However, I see K-Rod doing that as he is a free agent in 2009.
Joba is a starter for the unforeable future as he should be. I think he will retire a Yankee great. Talent like him only comes around once or twice a decade.

I would keep Joba as the set up man for Rivera, make the game a 6 inning game again, like it was in 1996 with Rivera setting up Wetlands. Have Joba pitch the 7th & 8th inings Mariano the 9th ballgame over the Yankees Win the Yaaaaaaaaaaankeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees Win (as Johnm Sterling says LOL).
When Mariano retires, move Joba to the closer position.

Definetally Reliever. He is kind of like Gange. He was an OK starter, but would lose all energy by the 5th. When he switched to closer, he became one of the greats. Seeing Joba's body, I say he is a better reliver.

He was in the Bullpen and did great for the Yanks. Why fix what aint broke? Im a Sox fan but I love guys that throw the heat and make the games intense (even if it takes throwing two 98MPH fastballs over the head of Kevin Youkilis). Fun guy to watch. He could be a great starter too. I am sure the Yankees Front office has debated this for a while and they know alot better than any of us. He should be very exciting to watch either way and he will be very important to the Yankees over the next few years (especially if they continue having poor pitching and injuries like years past)

The Yankees made it very clear that Joba was brought up to be a starting pitcher. The circumstance, as it unfolded last season, made it necessary for the team to use him as a middle relief. It certainly was not what they wanted but they had no choice.
Look for Joba to eventually end up in the rotation.

Starter - He throws over 98 MPH and that can be use full for a 7 inning start, not a 1 inning relief.
Besides, thats why the Yankees signed Latroy Hawkins. So Joba can become a starter and have Hawkins cover for him.

You at least need to let him start for a season and see how he looks. He may pitch 200+ innings being just as effective as he was out of the pen, or he may struggle as a starter and be better ouf of the pen...you just gotta wait and see how he does as a starter.

The Yankees have had him penciled in as a starter for 2008. I would rather have him as a one-two punch with Mariano, especially with Girardi as the manager. He cooked too many young arms with the Marlins....raised to another level the ridiculous way Billy Martin overused young arms when skipper of the A's.

If someone has the strength and stamina to go 7 innings, he should start, no exceptions. There are always arms that can go an inning or two. Seven inning arms are harder to come by. You don't waste a thoroughbred on a quarter mile track.
