ok here it is, i'm doing a science project and it's on pH in water but i dont know what pH is, nor if lower the pH in the water the better or the lower the better, these are what i've tested; bottled water:9, aquarium water:10, tap water:12.
if i got them wrong or something please tell me but i just need to know what ph is better, lower or higher? thanks for helping me :]

pH is a measure of the acid content in water, but on a special scale that for each 1 unit increase, the acid content DECREASES by a factor of 10. The scale goes from 0 to 14.

Your measurements seem suspect- bottled water should be very close to pH7, and the others look about 2 pH units too high.

Actually, the "best" pH is right in the middle, at pH7. Sports fish cannot survive in water of pH6, acid rain is about pH4, the vinegar you have at home is about pH3, lemon juice about 2.5. Low pH is bad because more of the harmful metals (cadmium, lead, mercury) can dissolve into water. Moreover, highly acid water can cause burns.

On the other side of the ledger, blood is about pH 7.5, "hard" drinking water about pH 9, household ammonia about pH 11, and dishwashing powder solution about pH 12. Above that level, water is undrinkable, and at pH 14, burns can occur . (see "Drano" labels).

Lower Ph In Water

Water ph in drinking water is important. A ph below 7 is acidic while,ph above 7, between 8 and 10 is considered excelent. Your ph in the blood should be basic. With a higher ph, water contains more hydroxyl ions, that is more hydrogen and oxygen.People who are sick with diabetes, high blood pressure, allergies and other sicknesses usually have low ph.

pH indicates the concentration of acid/base in a solution. For water the normal pH is around 7 (neutral). So, for your case, the lower the pH the better it is. Bottled water has pH 9 which is better than the other source. Tap water might contain other metals/residue that's why the pH is so high.

Hope this helps.

If your tap water is pH 12, please don't drink it. pH 14 is the highest pH for a strong base, such as Drano or Liquid Plumber, so you will have very clean insides...

pH is defined as the negative logarithm of the concentration of the hydronium ion. Water usually is neutral pH of 7. Less than 7 is acidic, higher than 7 is basic. Examples of low pH is stomach acid, vinegar, lemon juice. Examples of high pH is ammonia, dishwashing detergent, Drano.

It really depends.

If it's too high on the pH scale it's a very strong base and can be very harmful; similarly if it is too low its a very strong acid and can also be harmful.

Bases and acids are both corrosive.

The best pH will be neutral: the closer it is to 7, the safer it is.
