Your daughter should get the shot, because it will prevent cancer later in life. How lucky this generation is to have such a thing.
As to bc, it would be wise due to her slow mentality. I worked as an intern in a psychiatric hospital and several teenagers were pg because of poor staffing and the male patients would impregnate them. The girls were too slow mentally to avoid the situation, and one didn't even realize what had happened during the night. How sad for these girls who already had major problems dealing with life. And of course, the babies had to be put up for adoption. So, yes, bc is most important.
The less others know about this the better, because they will just make rude remarks and laugh about it. This is a very serious question, and I respect your asking us and trusting that we won't make fun of your daughter, or you, for asking.
Follow your doctor's advice. He seems to have your daughter's future in mind.
Good luck, and bless your family.

The shot from that commercial is actually a vaccination for HPV, a virus that causes cancer and genital warts. It has nothing to do with birth control.
As for bc pills, I started them when I was about 19. I think 10 is way to young for that (mostly because 10 is way to young to be having sex, but you don't have total control over that). Bc pills require a lot of responsibility because they need to be taken at the same time every day. Also, they may lead her to believe she doesn't need condoms ... which she does ... anybody can get an STD ... no matter how young

That is not birth control Honey. Is this a real question or a joke? I'm sure your pediatrician must have explained what Gardasil is for.
*I didn't mean to insult you. It's just the wording of your question made me question the validity of it. At any rate, there is no need to put your daughter on birth control because of a disability. I have heard of parents doing this, and I just don't understand it. It is very possible to teach your daughter to watch out for herself and not fall prey to wolves in sheep's clothing. It isn't necessary to go to this extreme. She is ten. There is no reason why she should be without adult supervision long enough to get into such a situation. She should start birth control if and when she makes the decision to become sexually active, which may not be for several years (one would hope). Besides that fact, it still has noting to do with Gardasil. I think Gardasil is a good vaccine, but I don't agree with insisting on it for young girls. It should be a parent's decision, and the parent should do lots of research before making it. Good luck.
P.S.- The idea is to protect the child from HPV before she becomes sexually active, and kids do start earlier and earlier, but I think doctors, parents, and school officials are pushing the panic button too soon.

The shot to prevent ovarian and cervical cancer it is a good idea. I would definetely consider that option.
However, Birth control as one of the methods to prevent pregnancy at age 10 is not a good idea. Different methods of birth control have varying characteristics.
The Pill and Shot are methods for people how do not want to have children soon, but it does not prevent STD's (Sexually Transmitted Diseases). Therefore, these are good for people that are sexually active with one partner.
Another type of Birth control are Condoms. This is the only method that provides significant protection from sexually transmitted diseases, but is not as accurate as the pill or the shot.
Also, cultural and religious attitudes on birth control vary significantly. The society exposes kids to sex in many different ways. For kids nowadays sex is not a secret. The Pill and the shots have a lots of chemicals and hormones that I personally don't think are good for a girl that is still growing.
However, the fact that prevents pregnancy is very true and if you're not sure. Talk to your girl and explain the facts about sex and the consequences (unwanted babies, body changes, STD's with pictures if you have any) It is important that they know the truth before you start any method.
I was in a Catholic School all my life, and the nuns talked to us and taught us everything I just told you.
They said:"It is on you the decision of having sex or not, regarless what your parents have showed you. That's why its important to know that your body is precious and respect it.
The appropiate time to start any method will come to you.!!!
Hope this helps, this info helped me to go thru middle school, high school and college. Now as a college graduate, I am thankful they taught me well.
Good for the shot to prevent cancer, but wait for the BC.The appropiate time to start any method will come to you.!!!

well the shot is called Gardisil. Its for a less chance of ovarian cancer. Girls can get this shot before they are sexually active. If shes having problems with her period, like if shes not having them at the regular time of month she normally does, or has it 2 weeks a month, you can put her on it to help with that, but other than that i dont think she should go on the pill until she is sexually active. Maybe if you put her on the pill now, she will think "oh well i can have sex with whoever and not get pregnant" or maybe you should go ahead and get her started on the pill. You should talk to her about it and tell her even though you might put her on the pill, its not ok to have sex with any guy. Just think about it and im sure you will make the right decision. But definatly YES on the Gardisil shot.

Your doctor is probably talking about the HPV vaccine. It protects women against a virus which is known to cause cervical cancer. The reason doctors want to do it early is because it absolutely must be given BEFORE someone becomes sexually active for it to be most effective.
Here is a link to the Department of Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The "shot" is a vaccine against the virus that causes cervical cancer. It is not related to birth control.
