Take a look at the Dell Inspiron 1720.

It's rated #2 by Consumer Reports. It scored 73 and the Mac scored 77 for $1000 more than the Dell. It's not worth that much money for a Mac.

The 1720 is a 17" widescreen with a full sized keyboard.

You can configure it to suit your needs.

I just purchased one for a friend. Here's what it included.

17" Wide Screen Monitor 1900 X 1240 resolution max.
2.4 GHz Intel Core2Duo Processor
2 G RAM
160 GB Hard Drive
CD/DVD +/- RW Drive
Built in WiFi
BlueTooth Capable
Vista Home Premium
Various case colors are available
15 months McAfee

Some other things I don't recall. Take a look and configure one. It was $1803 with $264 of instant savings at the time.

Good luck. Have fun shopping.

Usually can't go wrong with ALIENWARE, Toshiba, HP, SONY, DELL.

My Toshiba was pretty good (despite it's age), until I accidently stepped on it last year - until then, it was in pretty good nick considering it was old enough to have a 133MHz P1 processor.

Just make sure it has a touchpad, rather than a trackpoint for mouse control.
