for video games and internet connection a desktop is better. For obvious reasons a laptop is best if you need to go many different places throughout the day but still need to do work on it. I would say a desktop

at least it's less likely to get stolen than a laptop too.... that'd suck

It's a question of what you'll be doing with it really. Most laptops these days can do just about anything a desktop can.

The most noticeable difference is in speed. If you need to run a lot of applications at once or run applications that will chew up a lot of memory, then go for a desktop.

Desktops are also more expandable in terms of peripherals as well. Not all laptops have ports or enough ports which allow for reasonable expansion. By expansion I mean scanners, printers, cameras, webcam, keyboard etc.

Why would you need a standard keyboard plugged into a laptop? Because if you're going to be working with a lot of numbers, you'll find that doing them on a laptop is a killer since it has no designated keypad. Numbers are embeded in the top row of the keyboard.

You really need to decide what you're going to do and then look at what suits your needs best. This means giving serious thought to what programs you will be using etc.

I will also say that if you are using computers at school, you may find that a standard keyboard is far better to use than a laptop board - unless they use laptops at school. The difference in finding the keys can slow down your typing speed dramatically if you have to stop and keep looking for keys.

You can buy relatively compact desktops which will do all you require and can be easily upgraded later as your needs change.

If I were looking to get a computer for a student, a desktop is the way I would go. I would only get a laptop for student if they were in University (College) and needing to study at various campus locations and portability was a must.

When I was a college student, I preferred using a laptop. It's mobile. For example, if you need to do a report while taking a break at school, bringing a laptop would save time.

What do you use it for?

Gaming - you need a desktop. A lappie will simply not do it for you.

Multimedia - either will do perfectly.

Taking it to your mates' house or travelling a lot - it must be a lappie.

It really is down to your own decision. It simply depends on what you want to do with it.

I think a desktop would be better because you will find it to have better graphics and be better for gaming
