We don't celebrate x-mas for religious reasons but anyhow, all of our neighbors do and so this year, we even did lights outside (just plain green lights) and I got some target dollar gifts for the neighbors kids. Anyhow the situation is that one of the neighbors who said that everyone was exchanging gifts has ordered some toys for my kids online. She is the exact same person who said that the gifts exchanged would be dollar store type gifts... I am pretty sure that they are not dollar items that she got for us and now I am irritated because she has spent way more than I did. What is the proper thing to do? Should I get her another gift at the last minute? I mean, this just seems like a rude game to me...

It is rude!!! Give the gifts from $ store and make her eat her words. If she says anything, tell her "Well, that's what you said and we agreed' If she doesn't like it , then she's not much of a good neighbor anyway so to heck with it. Next year suggest drawing names in the neighborhood.

Don't worry about it. If she said the gifts that they were exchanging were dollar store type gifts then that's what it is. If she chooses to go out and spend more then that then it's up to her. Perhaps she saw something she couldn't resist and was excited about and didn't mind spending a little bit more. It's not about the money at Christmas whether you give a gift that is $10 or $1. It's the thought behind it that your thinking of the person. I wouldn't return your gifts they are perfectly acceptable. I can see where your frustration would be since you don't typically celebrate Christmas and maybe are not at ease with things. Just relax nobody will be judging you over what you got especially if they are one that set the tone of the exchange.

I also have a 11yo step-daughter and he or she loves Taylor quick! i think of that a robust present might basically be a present card so as that she would be ready to purchase in spite of she needs....they're choosy at that age, have faith me!
