Since they are going in opposite directions, the distance between them is increasing at the sum of both speeds (each hour, they go 44 + 55 miles apart)

44h + 55h = 297
h(44+55)=297
h = 3

3 hours is when the cars will be 297 miles apart.

Let H represent the number of hours.
Then: 44H + 55H = 297
99H = 297
H = 297/99
H = 3
