the hat...because he clearly states that he stuck the feather in his hat and called it Macaroni.
" called " is past tense..therefore it couldnt be the pony because it wouldve already have had a name if he came into town riding it...and the town would already have had a name aswell or he wouldnt have called it a town.

I think that Yankie Doodle didn't name anything. It was the guy who wrote the song about him that did. After speaking to Mr Doodle, he told me that he called the donkey Steven. The town was not on the map, so he asked a local kid who told him to "give me ya wallet or I'll slash ya!" The feather was actually found in his pocket, with a piece of macaroni, which his mum had made for his tea. You see, it was just a simple mistake by the writer.... (to be honest, I don't know)

macaroni- pony

I stand corrected- from wiki
A "macaroni", in mid-18th-century England, was a dandyish young man with affected Continental mannerisms; the joke being that the Yankees believed that a feather in the hat was sufficient to make them the height of fashion. Whether or not these were alternative lyrics sung in the British army, they were enthusiastically taken up by the Yanks themselves.

Isn't it "and called it Macaroni"?.......
Anyway, If we are going by grammar he would be talking about the feather. That doesn't make much sense, so I'm gonna say the pony. Its the only logical answer to me lol
oh no wait, it could be the town too.........this song is so stupid anyway! :-p

Since you don't normaly name feathers, I'd say he named the town Macaroni.
