It was not erected by the French. It was given by France to the U.S. in 1886, which then had to transport the statue to the U.S., build a pedastal for it, and put it up. I had a great aunt who, as a school girl, gave money at school to bring the statue and put it up.

The French constructed it and gave it to us. It arrived here in 1886. We were then responsible for finding a place for it and raising it there.
