A girl who has been orphaned for most of her life suddenly finds a magical neclace tat leads her to anouther wourld where she finds out she is royalty and has to go on a quest to save her parents.
oh and along the way she makes some friends and,through influence of the magice in the world,becomes a Bird-person.

I've read books where stranger things have happened, but the story has to flow well, or all the interesting plot points in the world won't help

the first half, reminds me a book I read in high school 6-7 years ago called the golden compass or also known as the his dark materials trilogy

Yes it sounds interesting. I like books that are out there. If you haven't seen it yet I recommend watching Pan's Labyrinth.

I wouldn't read it only because I'm not into fantasy style genres. But other than that, it sounds interesting.
