The Earth has been called Gaia in Greek, Terra in Latin, and most other languages have their own word for the planet.

The modern English word "Earth" comes from the 8th Century old English word "eorpe", meaning soil, dirt, ground.
"Earth" was first used as the name of the planet around 1400. It is the only planet whose name in English is not derived from Greek/Roman mythology.

Earth is an English name. Other countries and nations and cultures have their own names for our planet. However, English is the internationally accepted and recognized language for names of planets. This does make Earth the official name for our planet.

Earth is the only planet whose English name does not derive from Greek/Roman mythology (as another answerer has suggested). The name is of Old English and Germanic origin.

The name Earth originated from the 8th century Anglo-Saxon word erda, which means ground or soil. In Old English the word became eorthe, then erthe in Middle English. Earth was first used as the name of the planet around 1400AD.
