This guy, signing in as MichaelWolfe18, has been IMing me but it is so obvious that he is trying to run a scam: he says he's in Africa and needs help getting back home, could I cash some money orders for him or even usps fast cash money, or some crap like that - it's actually funny (unless he's hacking my puter). Anyway, how can I report his name to Yahoo as a potential scammer to warn others of this name (even though he can just dump this name and get another, but at least I will have made some type of inconvenience for him)? Anyone? Thanks.

Just forward the email to them.

Most all of this sort of fradulant activity originates from Nigeria, where the laws are weak and the authorities are easily bribed. Little can be done to prevent it.

To be quite honest, for a poor country such as Nigeria, these internet scams are a major source of "hard-currency" (US dollar, UK pound etc) for their local economy. The officials there simply "look the other way".

About the best one can do is scambait the b@$^@#ds and have some fun in the process.

"So what is scambaiting? Well, put simply, you enter into a dialogue with scammers, simply to waste their time and resources. Whilst you are doing this, you will be helping to keep the scammers away from real potential victims and screwing around with the minds of deserving thieves."

"It doesn't matter if you are new to this sport or a hardened veteran; if you are wasting the time of a scammer, or frustrating them in any way well that's good enough for us, and we would welcome you to join with our now very large community."

This is what I do:

In Yahoo mail, options, set your options to:
1. block HTML images
2. display full headers

If you get a legitimate e-mail and you want to see the image, just scroll to the bottom of the message and click to display.

To report these @#$%^:
Open the e-mail - carefully (underline carefully) - do not click anything -- select the full header and the message. Right-click to copy.
Scroll down to Compose and click it to open
Paste the header and e-mail in the message box.
Send it to:
reportphishing@antiphishing.org

Return to messages, click in the box preceding the offending message and mark it as SPAM - which blocks it from further accessing your mailbox.
