First establish what you want the vitamen to do (i.e. do you need more energy, is your metabilsm slow, heart healthy)
once at the store you can read off what each brand does and what it contains. Try and buy a vitamen that cordinates with your age and gender.
Also check the dossage on the vitamins, if you know you eat a lot of iron and the vitamin you buy has 150% iron then you might want to only take half the vitamin.
Also ask your doctor or the pharmasis at the store you go to, they will be happy to help and it will endure you are getting what you want.

Honestly, I go to the store and look at the labels of all the chewable kids ones. I hate swallowing pills that taste like crap and those are just about the same. Usually I opt for the ones with extra iron, because I run borderline anemic and it is better than having to take an extra iron everyday. I also buy the chewable calcium and take that because I have had problems with bone mass in the past. I usually stick with the ones that are 'complete' and they can be either name or store brand. I have not seen much of a difference.

I buy them according to my needs, and I do read labels to try to get the best quality - Jamieson or Swiss Herbal usually, both available at the local pharmacy.
I take Vitamin B-complex for sure, but never with added Zinc or Iron because the latter, non chelated, are hard on the digestive system. I buy B-6 and take that separately, the same applies to Vitamin E capsules and Folic Acid.
My desk drawer in this room has all my supplements, and believe me there are plenty. Guess I could be labelled a hypochondriac? Hmmm...

Depends if its a prenatal or not... for prenatal, I usually go with the cheapest like target brand, etc.
But now, I always tend to look at the ingredients listed. I hear some multivitamins have "fillers," so thats why I decided to try out a food based multi-vit. I went to whole foods market for it...it was expensive, but it seems to be good, so far.

I research and use common sense. Most multi-vitamins have similar ingredients so the search can be a crap shoot. IMHO you should try whole food vitamins... nothing artificial and allegedly therefor easier to digest. I like Solgar's whole food multi. I think it's called EarthSource. Vitaglo.com usually has the best price.

I choose my vitamins according to my needs, if I need extra energy, I'll go with a b complex vitamin, if I feel my immunity geting a little low, I pop a vitamin c,; and so on
cost and brand don't really afect my purchase, but percentage in milligrams of and certain mixes, ratios of vitamin, and additives of vitamins do influence my purchase
sometimes I feel a little anemic so whatever brand offers a mix of folic acid and b vitamins that's the one I;ll purchase
