This term can be used in several different ways but in most common uses it is said for attending someones funeral as in the person died and you at least owe it to them to go to the funeral and honor their life as it was. Other ways it could be used but not really ever used is like when you have your dues as in a toll road on the highway or something along those lines...

In the career world, it means starting out at a less desirable position and/or pay scale. If u have just graduated from college with your degree, no work experience in your field, then it is "paying the dues", by starting small and and working your way up the ladder in gaining more experience and maybe even getting a higher degree to become more competitive.

It simply means that you have made mistakes or poor choices and have learned lessons from those experiences. A criminal who has sat in prison, gets out and says "I have paid my dues to society and want a clean start."
