ok, me and muh friend are into sports, big football fans and also every other sport but we was wondering. Do you think the NFL will ever need to find innovative ideas to keep people interested? Boxing and baseball both were dominant at one point. Boxing has fallen to UFC, and baseball just got unpopular as time went on. Do you think football has anything to worry about? will it continue to be the dominant sport for ages?

The NFL is well positioned to maitain dominance. Games are only once a week, there is a salary cap to keep costs down and competitive balance, and it resonates well with the common man.

There are some things that could impact its popularity.

The biggest factor may be the growing Latino poplulation in the US, which to this point cares little for the NFL.
The NFL is trying to address this (Spanish games, games in Mexico), but not to huge success. That population will one day play a huge role in what sports are watched, so the NFL has some work to do.

Another factor could be the fate of the NBA. If players get to big and too good, the game may change for the worse. Already kickoffs have become very dangerous, and eventually you will see rules changed to mitigate the impacts.
Rules overall may need to be changed to protect players, and that could impact popularity.

The third factor would be something like the UFC coming along that is edgier and appeals to younger generations so strongly that football slips. Perhaps football played with no pads or helmets.
Boxing was on shaky ground before UFC, but the power of "X" sports cannot be denied.

In the end, I think it unlikely, but if you go out 50 years, who knows?
The same disbelief was held by baseball fans in the 1950s.

football might die out far into the future if they keep adding in these stupid rules babying the qb's. the real greats and legends will be forgotten when new emerging stars rise in an easier time to pass (hint hint: brady and peyton). rivalries between players hardly even exist anymore (remember the Hovan and Sapp vs. Favre in the 90's?) . so, way in the future, things might be different. football was just so much more enjoyable 10 years ago then it is today. all you see today is the qb screaming at the ref, "throw the flag, he hit me too hard!" 15 yard penalty. wtf?

i'm still a die hard football fan, but i wouldn't be surprised to see things turn. the MLB will never gain the top interest level considering only a small handfull of teams actually have a chance. the NBA might come around, but i never watch it. NHL? i haven't watched a game since i was 6-7 years old, and i don't plan on starting anytime soon. soccer? is there really a professional soccer team in America? boxing? can be fixed.

small chance, but the way things are heading, it might die out years from now.

Honestly I don't think it will ever die.

Right now baseball is too much of a boring sport for a lot of people to get into. There are too many rules and regulations and guide lines that you need to follow and its just a boring game to watch. Basketball is probably the most exciting of the 4 major sports, but still pales in comparison to football here in the states. Basketball even though has more world wide popularity doesn't really hit home with a lot of people.

Football has become the national pasttime and will be like that for years to come. Just like every sport they will invent new ways to make it better.

Football has nothing to worry about...Unless all get convicted for something.

Good luck!!

Probably not.

I once heard (I think from author, Michael Lewis) that the heavyweight championship is being fought every Sunday between the Tackles and the Defensive Ends of the NFL. The guys who might have become boxers have seen a more lucrative, and less punishing future in football and basketball, than boxing.

Unless the risk of life-affecting injury gets too high, or some other sports alternative with higher pay comes along to replace football, it isn't going anywhere.

Yes...and boxing was fixed and everyone started catching on.
Football if u see one of my questions a few days ago will fall off drasticaly within 5 years:(..There are no great QB's is my reasoning. The Monday night football games have been horrible for years now and that was what I feel made football the dominant sport...now even Sunday nights are getting bad!

Maybe, but not in the forseeable future. Football is the game that takes best advantage of TV, and the NFL has been by far the best managed major sports association. Goodell seems bent on keeping it tightly managed, which is smart.

Baseball waned for years after a players strike, but is actually back, with last year representing the highest attendance ever.

Boxing goes up and down with the existence of a unifying champion, and the UFC has definitely taken a lot of eyeballs, so I don't expect it back.

Football will never die

the answer.. not as long as Football keeps making sure that all the teams have a fair chance at winning.. the problem with Baseball is the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, and Mets have big $ and no real salary cap.. so every year we know who's going to be the favorites by who spends the most in the offseason.. we know that Kansas City and Florida will stink.. and then the games are long and kinda boring to watch in their entirety.. NFL.. it's up for grabs every week.. Baltimore nearly dropped the Patriots, and last night, Dallas needed a miracle to beat Detroit.. so people tune in and watch.. and because people want to see it, then the advertising dollars are there.. granted I think the NFL is slowly losing ground to the NCAA.. especially if the NCAA fans get what they want and get a playoff

the only reason i can see it going down hill is these crappy QB roughing calls, and the NFL network having all the thursday games. these are two somewhat fixable things, but in a way, it just adds more controversy, which adds more popularity. one might get sick of a micheal vick of oj simpson case, but those are only linked to football by the players, and doesnt directly affect the game otehr than maybe an accused player's team
