For black tie you need to get that simplistically elegant look happening...
Now, if you want to look very nice but conservative, get a small brown bag. Patent leather the same color as the pumps would be best for this. http://www1.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/2990086/2/istockphoto_2990086_brown_purse_isolated.jpg
To step it up a little, you could try a brown bag which is beaded or embroidered in brown.

If you really want to jazz it up, but still look elegant and not over done - go metalic. Gold, silver or bronze bags will add an luxiourious look. Personally I think the bronze would be best, followed closely by the gold.

If it were me, I'd look for a beaded bag, because I like have something unique. The bronze bag would probably give you the classiest look.
Good luck and have fun!

Linz,
nothing personal - I have been to plenty of black tie events and I can promise you that I always left my purse at home.
That said, women I attended the events with did in fact always make it a point to match the purse with the shoes. (Now you know why I was later scolded - my shoes only matched either my suit or tuxedo).
Don't sweat the small stuff - you'll do fine. These are merely events that prove your getting OLDER. Find any gray hair yet? LOL.
Have a good evening!
Gerry :)

Black tie? I'd go for oomph with the purse, something to match the sparklies on the dress, and play up against all that brown. You did say something about rhinestones, didn't you? There are a lot of small handbags to choose from. What's your style? Find one that matches your personality. Red sequins, anybody? I have one you could borrow...

i would LOVE a turquoise blue little bag, SOOOOOO adorable. NOOO patterns though, just turquoise or a burgendy red, or a little bit of a lighter red, but not too much lighter. Gold would be AH-DORABLE with it also. Or even a silver. A medium dark but still pretty green would look good too. But not a brown....all brownn??? WHAT a drag! no black either. NOO brown or black.
I suggest these colors because you need a little bit of a ZING or POP of color. Just make sure it is a small unpatterned clutch in one of the colors i suggested.

that outfit sounds cute. if your shoes already match your dress then it might look odd if your purse is a totally different colour. maybe go for a purse that has browns throughout it but is patterned? im thinking maybe a sequined brown and gold purse (or silver, depending on which u prefer).
Maybe similar to the one below?

a red cluch purse would match, allot of women make the mistake of always making thir purse match thir shoes. YOu need something to "pop" on that brown outfit! or you'll look too plain.

No matching required. Almost any small purse would work, even in a contrasting color such as cream or red. Or maybe a sequined one. Have a good time!

Since your shoes and dress match, your purse can stand out. It ought to be that way anyway.
