I am planning a vacation to San Francisco with my boyfriend. This is our first time to California. Besides San Francisco, we would like a daytrip elsewhere nearby.. what do you guys recommend?

The best one day trips in my opinion from SF for a first time visitor would either be the Wine Country or the Monterey Bay Area. Both areas are very scenic with lots to do and see and both places have great restauarants to eat at.

Well, the obvious thing is Napa...You can easily go winetasting for the day.

Depending on how much time you'd be willing to spend getting out of town, there are a lot of other options.
* Old Town Sacramento - Train museum, lots of historical sites that tell the story of the Gold Rush and subsequent founding of California as a state.
* Marin County - Tiburon and San Rafael are both fun, quaint cities to visit for shopping, dining and water views. If you're up for something physical, the Marin Headlands is a great state park that offers amazing views as well as great hiking and mountain biking.
* Highway One - The drive South on Highway One is absolutely gorgeous. You can see ocean forever on one side, and either farms or steep mountains on the other. Half Moon Bay is the first "major" town you'll get to. It has quite a few resorts, but can be expensive to stay in. Santa Cruz is the next "major" town...It's much less expensive, and offers many more tourist stops, such as the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk (an amusement park with California's oldest wooden roller coaster), The Mystery Spot (where gravity doesn't follow the rules) and Roaring Camp Big Trees Railroad (a train ride through the Sequoia Redwoods). If you're up for going just a bit further, you'd get to Big Sur. If you end up there, be sure to stop for lunch at Nepenthe. You can sit in front of a cozy fire, or enjoy a drink on a deck that hangs at the edge of the cliff, and if feels like you're floating on the edge of the earth.

Muir Woods and Marin Headlands.
It just over the GGB, not much driving.
Muir Woods is your chance to see the Coastal Redwood trees.
Marin Headlands offers spectacular views of SF and the bridge.

The wine country is always a good suggestion, though I favor the less congested Sonoma Valley to Napa. Either is beautiful. The problem if you only have a day: more driving, drink-and-driving if you are not careful, its costly ($10 - $40 per couple per winery to taste). Whereas the woods are free, and the Redwoods are more spectacular than the wine. I like the wine country better if you can get a bed-and-breakfast, go to dinner, spend money, and not have to drive back to the city.

I like everyone's ideas! Take Highway 1 from San Francisco and drive down the coast stopping at Half Moon Bay and Capitola or Santa Cruz, head down to the Monterey area, stop in Pacific Grove and spend the night there.

for a day trip, take a boat ride to Alcatraz. eat at Fisherman's Wharf, drive to Lombard street -it's the world's crookedest street. you guys will enjoy the ride. check out the food in chinatown-cheap but very good. this will keep you busy for a day trip. enjoy the vacation and bring long thick jackets. it's coooold!

I live in Napa which is like around an hour away and if youre old evough wine tasting is really popular and for me Napa is boring but ill have to admit it is sooo pretty... and in SF Union Square is cool bart is fun to ride if you wanna see people talk to themselves... and if you drive to to fun parts of SF you get to see homeless people smoke crack yippy... But in napa you wont see that hahaha... In Concord we have a mall and a Benni Hannas which is amazing...they cook the food in front of you...

what do you like to do? will you have a car?

go to calistoga, through the napa valley. in fact, take the silverado trail, which you can drive or bike. ithe trail has got several small wineries where you can go tasting, and then calistoga is just past it, famous for its health spas and healing waters. now that's a nice day.
