We're expecting about 1/2 inch of ice to acumulate in the next 24 to 48 hours. What kinds of things would you do for your family to prepare for the storm?

Candles, blankets, food that doesn't require electricity to cook and activities other than the TV or computer.

Probably the biggest concern is the possible (probable) loss of electrical power due to downed power lines. I'd make sure I had flashlights, candles, etc. on hand & alternative heating sources, if available. Travel will be hazardous, so adequate food supplies (hopefully stuff that doesn't need to be cooked) should be stocked to last a couple of days, as well as bottled water, as municipal water systems could be disrupted and electrical water pumps ( if you have well water) will not be working.

I live in Northern Michigan and encounter ice storms & blizzards from time to time. I have a small generator and a kerosene heater - just in case!

Happens every year, no need to panic. Make sure you have the basic food items, bread, milk, eggs, OJ, soup, etc.

Some salt for your driveway and walkway, some flashlights with batteries. Have some extra blankets for your beds in case you lose power and heat. Brrr.

Bottled water.

Your pets will be ok, but you must not leave them outside, just put them out to go potty and bring them back in immediately.

Drive only if necessary -- those icy roads are really deadly.
