Has anyone refused ultrasound scans in pregnancy? What was your reason?

I refused scans as they thought my baby was small, but I could feel her inside and knew she wasn't, just tucked up. She was 7.5lbs born so I was right, she was nice and average.

Has anyone else refused scans?

I didn't have any ultrasound scans. I didn't really have to refuse any, though, as I was cared for by independent midwives, and they shared my belief that you don't need ultrasounds unless they're medically indicated.

My main reason for not wanting them is that they can cause a great deal of uncertainty and worry. We'd already decided that if a problem were picked up on a scan we'd continue with the pregnancy, so saw little point in having one. Also, the likelihood of a perceived problem being a false alarm is rather high, so I didn't want to have to worry.

And regarding scanning to determine the size of the baby - these are notoriously unreliable. And even if your child is bigger or larger than expected (and it's unlikely that'd actually be a problem) there's nothing that can be done about that in utero, anyway.

I don't have a problem at all with anyone else having scans, it just wasn't right for me and my baby. If I'd had a higher risk pregnancy, though, (twins, for example), I would have had at least one scan.

Regarding them not being harmful - I agree that all evidence we have so far indicates that they're not, but it's not been (and cannot be) proven so. I personally think that they're fine, and pose no risk to mother or baby, but just wanted to point out that there's no definitive evidence of their safety.

I did have the doppler used on me twice during my pregnancy, which is ultrasound. And it was used several times during my labour, as I ended up having to be induced.

Why would you refuse the chance to see your baby? I had ultra sounds with both of my boys, and had the pic's printed out for their baby book too, I knew for a fact that they were perfect before they were born, and I have the pic's as a reminder of all the fun I had being preggo (not, had complicated pregnancy's) but the kids now, think its really cool that I wanted pictures of them, even back then!! Its safe, and tells alot about the baby and their growth, I thought it was fun, so did my husband!! about the only thing I really didn't care for was having a full bladder pushed on, but hey, you get over the little things when you see them moving around on the screen!!

You didn't explain why you refused ultrasounds.
I've never refused them. I had high-risk pregnancies with many complications. It was always nice to be reassured that my little ones were doing well.

Ultrasounds are safe, so why refuse?

You cannot feel how large or small your baby is, btw.

No way have I ever refused an ultrasound. I want to make sure that my baby is ok and of course I love to see her moving around in my tummy and to get those special photos of her.

I don't understand why you would refuse an ultrasound. I like to know that everything is okay with my baby and be sure that they are healthy. You can tell a lot from an ultrasound.

i really dont see the need or want to refuse one in the first place...i like seeing my baby on that screen and seeing her move instead of just feeling her...

Why the heck would you have refused a scan? They are absolutely, perfectly safe...it's not like they tried giving you x-rays. Wow.

No. I love getting ultrasounds and seeing my baby progress and I love and trust my doctor too so I don't worry about that.
