Presumably this applies to Cornwallis's surrender at Yorktown. Cornwallis surrendered to Washington on October 19, 1781. Cornwallis was surrounded by a superior force of Americans and their French allies in September. He sought to hold out for relief from British troops coming from New York, which the British still held, but lost any early prospect of relief after the British navy suffered a rare decisive defeat in the Battle of the Capes. After French and American forces captured two redoubts held by his troops, Cornwallis decided that his situation was hopeless and negotiated a surrender. This was the last major battle of the American Revolution, although the formal peace treaty wasn't signed until 1783.
