I work at a humane society and when we ask for a vet reference, we are looking to see if you had any pets in the past and did they recieve vet care?? Were they altered?? Were they up to date on vaccines?? That sort of thing. If you don't have a vet reference, it is not the end of the world. Be honest and up front and say " I do not currently have a veterinarian. We had a rabbit for a brief period of time and we didn't take it to a vet. Do you have a list of veterinarians that you work with that you can recommend??"
We include a list of vets in the area that offer a free donated exam for an adopted animal. Then call around and get price quotes or see who's in your area. Vets will vary greatly on cost and on what type of services they provide.
Thank you for considering adoption first!

Most often they are just looking in reference to the animals you have listed on your form, if you are a current animal owner. they are looking for someone who takes their pet to the vet when required and keeps up with any treatment recommended by the vet. For example, if the vet said you dog had diabetes and you needed to come in and get his blood sugar tested once a month and you never did...that would be bad. Or if you never completed vaccinations. This is what they are looking for. The only other thing might be if you had a dog come in with a lot of problems that could be related to an unsafe environment. i.e. It kept getting out and got in fights or hit by a car. Questionable abuse, etc. Good luck with your dog adoption. And don't worry about the vet check! p.s. Yes, call and have the cat removed off of your records if you are no longer living with the cat. Just tell the vet what you said, it was your roommates cat and you have since moved.

Get into contact with a vet. Tell them you are looking to adopt a dog and need a vet reference. You may need to set up an account with the vet so they can tell the rescue more details about your from their point of view.
The rescue probably wants to know which vet you will be using and they want to make sure that vet is OK. They also want to make sure you have a vet that you use or will use, it shows you are prepared and have put some thought into getting a dog.
You may want to contact the rescue and ask about it.

Then you just need to tell them that the only pet you've had before is a rabbit. They're just making sure that people who do have dogs/cats get them looked after at the vets when they need it.

Just tell them you've only had a rabbit before, they're looking for references from people who have had dogs and cats and other animals, and checking that they were/are kept up to date on vaccinations, getting spayed or neutered and things like that.
