Begin going to yard sales and looking at the classified ads in your local newspaper. You will find lots of them for sale used. It is much easier to purchase one than to build one because not many people have the ability to grind and polish glass in the necessary curves accurately. As an alternative, get him a really good, used set of binoculars. If you hunt around you should be able to get either one for less than $50 used. this will not be state of the art stuff, but perfectly good for a five or six year old.

Unfortunately, telescopes are very hard to make at home, sine the optical parts are very difficult to find. For someone in 5th grade, a used binocular would probably be a better choice than a cheap telescope.
