With great difficulty. The best way is to get mega-famous, then survive on literary grants and pensions.

Don't even try. With that attitude you will make a poor poet, and realize a poor living. I believe that most great poems were written for the author's personal satisfaction in expressing what was truly felt, and for that reason alone. Emily Dickinson felt that her poems were too personal to be shared with anyone, and requested that they be destroyed upon her death. One of my favorite poets, Wallace Stevens, was an executive with Prudential Insurance Company in Hartford, Connecticut. It would be very hard to write anything inspirational with the creditors breathing down your neck.

You can't. Write poetry, and do what you need to do to survive while doing it.
