The brand is Anchor and it says for use in microwave or oven..so obviously its pretty heat resistant...

I want to use it to melt wax for candle-making..can this be done or is it a bad idea?

Here is a picture of it I found online if that helps...

If it will be touching the bottom of a pot that's on a burner, you'd probably be pushing your luck. Pyrex is not safe for the stove top. The uneven heating can cause it to break. The stuff isn't really safe at all. I've heard of many meals ruined because of Pyrex oven ware exploding. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/pyrex.html

"I was using my four cup Pyrex measuring cup to strain my tea in, which would make it much easier to get in my tea pitcher. I had let the tea cool for about ten to fifteen minutes before pouring. I had about one and one-half cups of tea in the measuring cup, and it exploded everywhere! The measuring cup was in hundreds of small pieces of glass! Everywhere...on the counter, all over me, on the floor where I was standing. I never had seen anything like it and was in total shock. "

I just Googled for this because I knew it would be there. This has happened to people I know...

Why not use an empty soup can or something?

The measuring cup would be fine inside a pot - I have done that to melt chocolate, etc. Do be careful with the wax as you know it can be dangerous. Do you have an old coffee can or something you could use to melt the wax in so that you won't have to clean it afterwards?

nicely it relies upon if the Glass Bowl Is Pyrex or not, with the aid of fact I wouldnt believe any glass dish to be put in Boiling water then removed from the boiling water to pour the wax. it would cool too quicky interior the air *(standard glass, not pyrex)* as nicely if the Pouring pot is Aluminum or metallic, it could be greater handy to bathe the wax off with the aid of fact All you may ought to do it warmth the outdoors of the pot with warm water... So i assume i might advise the Pouring pot except the glass bowl is Pyrex sort...

I do it all the time. I add water to the saucepan and put the Pyrex measuring cup in next. I use medium heat til it's melted then carefully remove it

You may want to line whatever you use with foil for clean up purposes...The last time I melted wax I put it in a galvanized bucket over a grill...but I'm a guy...lol

I wouldn't use it.
I use a slightly smaller pot on the bottom & another pot on top. Of course, you may not want to use the pot again for food after putting wax in it. Hard to get off.
The old can sounds like a better idea, inside a pot of water.

If it's not made for that purpose, don't do it. It's that simple. Whether it's Anchor or not. Use the proper tool for the proper use.
