eBay, if you're patient and careful. Also try the FatWallet forums and search for "laptop", you might be able to find a good deal. (http://www.fatwallet.com/c/18/)

Most retail store chains do not carry a good new laptop for under $500, however places such as BestBuy and Office Depot have mail in rebaits. I got a brand new Compaq Presario Laptop for $650 w/ a $200 mail in rebait. It takes a few weeks but you do get your rebait back. Used computers will run even cheaper and Walmart has great deals on laptops and some pretty good brands now too.

Circuit City has some right at $500. But you are going to either have very little ram, or the computer if its reconditioned is going to have some issues too! So you may want to try and spend a little more to get a better product in the long run!
Good Luck :)

You could move to a Third World country, paint your skin dark and be poor and then the white man would give you a better lap top than you can purchase in th US for free. Its called the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) program. Too bad they don't do that in the US huh:D

Try this. Go to consumereports.org, or pcmag.com or froogle.com. Froogle will list ALL prices and you can click through to the site that sells for under $500

at that price it be pretty tough, if your in college, your school have major discounts on computers if they sell them, or to retailers like hp, apple, and so on.... But if you have the time go check out outpost, and actually today I checked/borrowed the laptop from the comp lab at school HP dual core 2ghz and 2gb of ram.... pretty good techs for a lap top
