I wouldn't say that signing is 'important', because it really doesn't matter if you don't do it at all. It's just a tool that can make your life a bit easier.
It's really not hard to teach. You just need to memorise a few signs & get used to signing them every time you use the corresponding word. Your child will pick them up as easily as they do spoken language (although usually much earlier than they start speaking).
5 months is a terrific time to start. We started at around 4 months with my son. Be aware that they probably won't sign back until about 8-12 months, though.
My son is only 6 months, so I can't comment on our own experience, but from what I've seen with friends' children, signing is extremely helpful. The best thing, I think, is that it helps children stop becoming frustrated, as they can communicate their needs before they're physically able to talk.
Have fun with it!

It's not necessary, but I plan to do it with my son. I wish I would have with my daughter, but oh well. My brother in law's family is deaf, so he has been signing since he was very very young. I plan on having him teach me and my son the basics and him more when he is old enough to understand. I will speak and sign at the same time so that my son understands what is going on. It is like any other 2nd language. It always helps later in life!

Not really. I taught my kids a couple of signs - mainly for "more" (like if they wanted more food) and "all done". It helps somewhat, but babies are pretty good at communicating without it. :)
Where I feel it becomes more warranted, is when you have a child with a speech delay. Then it can be extremely helpful. Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it so much. good luck!!

My lil guy loves to watch Baby First TV. It teaches sign language. Its only like 4.99 a month through Dish Network and I LOVE IT. He is responding to colors , numbers, and shapes along with sign language.

I take sign language class and its really easy. It is really helpful and easy to retain if youre a visual learner. So having your baby relate a sign to what he or she wants would be really helpful.

I kept telling myself I was going to do it. I never really did and my daughter was and is fine. She is almost 3 years old and talks normal. Even before she talked, she understood everything I said and usually would point to things she wanted if I help up two items. I'm pregnant with a boy and I might consider trying it with this one. Only time will tell.
