Because other cultures tend to respect and take care of their elders....unfortunately, America has never learned that beautiful trait. Our seniors become disposable when we no longer find them valuabe. How sad!
We are a selfish society that is hell bent on "me"

That's not entirely true. We are pretty safe here is the U.S. We are not abandoned by our children as so many believe. Most seniors have the means to live quite nicely on their own and do not wish to live with their children. There are exceptions of course, but not many comparatively speaking. Very few are homeless. Some of the very elderly and sick are in nursing homes where they can get the best possible care. I don't know what would make the seniors happier and safer in India. Do they have retirement benefits and medical care like here? Do most have enough money to retire and enjoy a high standard of living? I would be interested in knowing.
You have probably heard some of us complain on here about a lack of money. However for the most part we are doing okay. We are on here on an expensive computer, we have automobiles, color televisions, most have admitted to being over weight, so we are not going hungry. Everybody wants more money.

Yeah - I know the feeling - asking a Q and only getting 3 As - 2 of which were silly. Me and Clint go way back - to the very Ist episode of Rawhide - and his Rowdie Yates days. Like John Wayne in Stagecoach - it was a great entrance - good enough to beget many more appearances on the silver screen. I'm now rather old, half-blind and awfully forgetful - but would hazard a guess my favourite Eastwood movie was the 3rd of his Spaghetti Westerns - 'A few dollars more' (?) As I (unreliably) recall - the success of the 1st 2 movies encouraged the producers to up the budget considerably- so as to include vivid scenes of the American Civil War - and its aftermath. In which the man with no name seemed more than best placed. Josey Wales, The Unforgiven etc were good - but don't linger in the mind as much. : ))

No abuse of elderly women in Indian culture is a real problem.
You have to realize that most of these cultures have a cloak of silence around such things as elder and domestic abuse -
Also remember this is a culture that still goes in for "bride burning" and killing young women who dont accept arranged marriages or who date outside their culture and shame their family by being sexually active and/or becoming pregnant.
Domestic abuse is REALLY bad in the Indian culture. There have been a number of their women murdered in Canada for daring to defy their families.
And its bad here because its bad in India, remember a lot of these countries DONT have family laws - and women have NO protection under the law, so abuses arent reported.
So no, if anything its much worse and many of the elderly are prevented from learning english if they immigrate to a western country with their families.
If you live in India you should know this, however I know people in India love to bash western cultures and make us out to be immoral selfish and cruel to our parents.
FYI a majority of us end up providing personal care for our parents, so contrary to popular misconception in places like India we do NOT toss them out onto the streets ......

I think it would depend on where in India you are living. A lot of india doesn't even have plumbing. I imagine it would depend on your view point too. A lot of elderly here in the USA live a pretty relaxing life. They earned it. My parents didn't have a lot of money, but they ended up buying a small farm 30 miles from town and lived there until they both got ill and came back home to us kids to stay until each one passed away.

my son works in India at times and that's not the story he brings home..... there, it depends on what caste you belong to... if you're poor, old and a woman, your lot is terrible, even if you do have family.... only if you're in the highest division can you hope to have a good life as you age.... son's first run-in with this was a stooped old woman who worked at the airport in the men's restroom, emptying the trash cans.... son tried to tip her a little something and the attendant there nearly shoved him out the door for trying it.... the begging runs from the very young to the very old.... India has many faces and several that she doesn't show to the rest of the world.......

Not necessarily true. Each is happiest where they are the most comfortable. Enough to eat and drink, clothes, warm and cool enough..it does not take much to make an older person happy..love of family helps a great deal also but many of us in all nations are shunned by younger people and our own children. thankfully not me but it can happen to anyone anywhere.

I am not really surprised since I dont know how safe we are here in America anymore. It seems we have more depression and other emotional issues than other countries as well. But we have so much ,,,,,
