Okay, I'm getting a leo gecko for the first time and I'm a little confused about the wetbox. Do they only need one wetbox? I was under the impression that they needed both their hot and cold hiding spots to be wet. However after reading several posts on yahoo, and online I'm beginning to think I've gotten this confused. If we are only supposed to have one wetbox, should it be in the hot climate? Also what substrate do you recommend. I have asthma and allergies so I need something that won't really pick a smell or start to mold when cleaned properly.

Thank you for your time!

YES! You need a humid hide!! Ignore the first two posts above!!

Humid hides are quite easy to make, you need a margarine container, spaghnum moss, and a mister! Cut a hole into the side of the container large enough for your gecko to fit in, fill up the container with moss, mist then put the lid back on.

Your little guy will just love it!

For substrate, personally, I'd use paper towels. Since you have asthma, sand will be dusty and its also dangerous for your gecko. If its ingested, it can cause blockage in the intestines and cause an impaction.

No reptile enclosure should stink if you're looking after it properly. Feces should never be left in the tank and should be cleaned up as soon as possible.

Good luck!

You need 3 hides. One on the warm side, one on the cool side, and a moist on the WARM side. I used a rubbermaid storage container, lined with paper toweling, and mist daily. Simple and easy to clean. As for substrate, I use NON-adhesive (no glue backs) shelf liner. Cheap, easy to clean, looks great. They also need a water bowl and a small dish of calcium powder. An under tank heater is a must on one side--no lights are needed--they are nocturnal. Here's my fave site:

No need for a wetbox. Leopard geckos are desert lizards and do best in a dry environment. When the gecko starts to turn more white, it means it will shed soon, and you can mist the gecko to help the process.
Don't use sand substrate. You don't need to use that mulch either, as that's more for tropical reptiles.
The best (safest and easiest to clean) substrate is to just put paper towels on the bottom of the tank.
