They will all ask for it. They will use it to run a credit check on you to see if you will have to pay a deposit. You have to be 18 because contracts are binding agreements. Technically you don't have to give it to them, but if you don't you will have to pay the max deposit amount which, depending on carrier could be more than $750.

If you need to sign a contract, they require a social number. Your best bet is to get a pre paid phone. They are more expensive, but you don't have to sign a contract. Just buy the phone, activate it, and put money on the phone when ever you need to.

If you want better features, at a cheaper price, you give them your social security number for a credit check. You don't really need to be concerned of identity theft thru getting a cell phone.

every cell carrier asks for your social and they always run a credit check as well, so if your not 18 your out of luck. if you want a phone without putting down your info then i would look into a pay as you go phone. every carrier has one so you can pick any service you want. they are a little more pricey but your not locked into a contract and you only have to give them a credit card number or you can buy the cards with cash. so that would probably be the best way to go. you can get them at most stores and at the mall as well.

You can get a prepaid card/phone. If you want to get a plan with a contract, you need to give SS#. It's a legit business, don't worry about ID theft.

Actually I used to work for Verizon ealier this yeah, and you can get a pre-paid phone. All they require is an id. No social because pre-paid phone's do not require a credit check.

Oh yeah, they ask for it.
But you have to be 18 or older.
But you can always get a go-phone.
