lol... 5 - 2 += ? you are supposed to take 2 away from 5 and the answer will be 3.

By removing.
If you have 5 chairs and you remove 2 of them you are subtracting 2 chairs from the group.
So after you remove the 2 chairs you are left with 3 chairs.
