I rent a place with hydronic heat.
Gas furnace, single pipe loop with radiators
tapped off, cartridge type circulator pump.
The pump became noisy, and the system was
'short cycling` and not heating effectively.
No air when bleeding the radiators.
Thinking the problem was the circulator, I
drained the system and checked the pump.
It looked fine, so I refilled the system and turned
it back on. It now works properly.
Why?????

Lawnrider;That's what I thought.
Pump is on a horizontal pipe which I checked
for debris.

Sounds like your air, or expansion tank was water logged and your drain and refill was just what it needed. Just do it again as needed because sometimes that kind of thing just happens. If it happens to often then you need to replace the expansion tank with a bladder tank and that should solve the trouble once and for all.

You may have also had debris lodged in the pipe, or at the pump and it was dislodged when you drained it.
