I know someone who's in their late 20's who has just started cutting. I wanted to know if this is normal for someone in their late 20's who's having problems.

Hello Pinky......
It is not normal for anyone, at any age, to cut themselves.
We all have times in our lives when we have problems, and
sometimes they feel so overwhelming, don't they?
However, if those problems seem so bad that a person begins
to cut themselves, it is time to seek wise counsel and speak
with a therapist who can help.
There is nothing wrong with asking for help---the problems multiply for any of us when we do not ask for help when we
desperately need it.
The local mental health clinic, a counselor at college, a therapist in the phone directory, or going to a trusted other
who can then direct this person who is now cutting herself
to help is the next important step.
You were wise to write and ask about this; I hope you will be
wise in advising this person to take the next courageous
step by assisting her (or you, if you are speaking
of yourself) to seek professional help.
No problem is worth injury to yourself. There are always
solutions, sometimes we just need help in finding those
answers......
I am praying you and/or your friend will seek the assistance
you need and deserve to get right now. In time you will
be so grateful that you did, dear.
Blessings to you,
Doris

Yes there have been cases. I have a couple of friends who are cutters. You would also be surprised by what other self-destructive habits they can pick up. Just because they are in their late 20's doesn't mean they can deal with their problems any better if they haven't learned how. My guess is a lack of coping skills.

It's certainly not normal behavior for anyone no matter what age.

However it is not uncommon and is usually associated with self hatred or a very troubled mind. One famous example is Amy Winehouse who apart from the drug problems also cuts herself.
