Makes sure that only law abiding citizens can purchase them.
Makes sure if someone uses a weapon in a crime that years are added on.
All the laws that need to be in place are already there, it is a matter of enforcement.
I would hate to live in a world where only outlaws have guns.
==========
Jurisdictions in the USA that allow law abiding citizens to carry a concealed weapon have significantly less violent crime.
I'm a liberal and proud of it, and also for gun control as only a deterent, not a solution. Criminals will always get guns if they want, therefore, in America, it is vital to arm the citizens.
I live in China as an ex pat where private ownership of guns is illegal. It took them over a hundred years to get them off the streets. However, unlike the USA, China's society is not nearly as violent. It works here, but would fail in the USA.

well, the state of vermont has no gun laws. No permits needed for concealed carry. No laws. Period. yet they have the lowest crime rate in the country.
Washington DC has the strictest gun laws in the country. No handgun ownership and rifles/shotguns are heavily regulated and the selct few who are allowed to have them must keep them disassembled. Yet the crime rate and murder rate by gun is one of the HIGHEST in the nation. Same goes for NY, NJ (newark) etc
Its been proven time and time again that gun laws do not deter gun crime. The only people who follow laws are law abiding people. Criminals already don't follow the law. Criminals very, very rarely have legal weapons and any gun law would simply be ignored by them.
England has virtually eliminated private gun ownership, yet gun crime has risen to historic levels. More and more police are carrying guns to combat the rise in UK gun crime. If gun laws worked, the opposite would be true.
Waitng periods, backround checks, restrictions etc only apply to the people who FOLLOW LAWS. Criminals will still go to the corner or the back alley and buy their weapons. Laws do nothing.
It sounds old, but when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.
The only law that would work is a mandatory, no parole 10 year sentence for anyone caught with an illegal gun.
If they use the illegal gun in a crime, mandatory, 20 years with no parole on top of their sentence for whatever crime they committed. No concurrent either. You do the full 20, then start your second sentence. that is the only gun law that will work.

The only benefit to gun control is, that lawmakers and politicians don't have to fear the people they represent. It used to be, that when a law was passed that didn't favor the people. They would round up the towns folk. Gather up the hoes, shovels, and pitchforks. And go down to the town hall, and change the laws themselves. That usually meant removing the "Lawmakers".
Nowadays, the people in charge don't have to worry about that. They have made laws tha stop you from carrying a shovel down the street. And they can sit in their offices without worry. No fear of loosing their jobs to raging citizens. Without fear, they can play us like puppets on strings. And pick and choose what freedoms and rights are good for them. Nothing good can come from gun control. Other than , dividing a nation that was founded, built and won its freedom. Out the barrel of a gun.

The US un-like most countries and especially western democratic countries ,has a horrid/vile GUN CULTURE.
It is in fact this CULTURE of guns that sees Americans killing themselves and each other at the rate of over 30,000 humans/ year.
All these good little CHRISTIANS love their guns and and the gun culture that has it's roots in the iconic images of the Old West and the "heroic" lone gunslinger personified in such famous films like SHANE with Alan Ladd.
Couple this ethos with the ludicrous bilge out of organizations like the NRA and we have an incredible KILLING GROUND called the USA.
Below are URLS that show the staggering difference between the gun related deaths in the US and that in other countries.
While the US has some 14.05 deaths per 100,000 .Britain has 0.57 deaths per 100,000 ,Germany 1.67 and the figures for most of the developed nations of the world are astounding low compared to the US.
For the RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS ,these CHRISTIAN Americans are fully willing to accept this horrendous slaughter of it's citizens .No doubt Christ would have owned and used an UZI .NOT !!!!!
My point here is with effective gun control the US can start destroying this evil slaughtering gun culture and reduce gun related deaths to the low levels in other developed nations and save the lives of at least 25,0000 American lives / year.
The NRA and the majority of Americans will of course not introduce effective meaningful gun control and you lot will continue to slaughter each other .
Saving 25,000 lives a year is just NOT seen as a benefit by the majority of CHRISTIAN Americans .
Americans kill or allowed to be killed 10 times as many of their citizens EVERY YEAR than were killed on 9/11.

This question has been asked so many times....it's almost not worth replying to.
The only benefit for gun control is the burglar breaking into your house to rob, rape and maybe kill you won't get shot by you.
Plus gun control helps the government take over the citizens that are helpless and unarmed...kind of like Nazi Germany

The reduction of tens of thousands of gun-related deaths...
I know, I know - it's our constitutional right, blah, blah... but so many crimes are are committed with stolen guns, and so many innocents are slaughtered every year. I wonder what the statistics are on gun deaths while protecting yourself or property vs simple crime...
Actually, it's the violent SOCIETY we live in that determines so much behavior. Look at us! The Departed was best movie, years before that Pulp Fiction was almost best movie. Young kids play horrible, violent video games. Sex is a no-no in this country, but violence is OK. It's US (as in WE) - not GUNS, that should change... rant, rant... It makes me so sad to see what's happened to this country. 30 years ago, it wasn't near this bad. Kids didn't kill people. Crime was so much less than it is, now...

None.
Research places that have strict gun laws and compare their crime rates to those places with more liberal gun laws.
This is what you will find: More gun laws more crime. Few gun laws less crime.
It's not an opinion, it is fact.
