Let X be the wins
Let Y be the losses
The soccer team won 3 times as many games as they lost:
so X = 3Y
They played 28 games:
so X + Y = 28

then do a little algebra and solve for Y:
X + Y = 28
Y = 28 - X

then replace Y in our first equation with our solution for it we just found:

X = 3Y
X = 3(28 - X)

Now solve for X:

X = 84 - 3X
X + 3X = 84
4X = 84
X = 21

Finally, we can use the x we found to solve for Y with our original equation:
X = 3Y
21 = 3Y
7 = Y
Y = 7

Hence there were 21 Wins and 7 Losses.

28/4=7 =7 They played four games because they won 3 and lost 1 which leads you to the process of division... therefore 28 = 4 the number of games played=7 7 is the answer
