The Birds was a short story, not a book. The short story is more slow and mood-building, and does not have as much action or characterization as the movie. The story is more about "what if?" and the movie is more of a survival story.

The Birds was written by Daphne du Maurier, a short story, and the movie in 1963 by Alfred Hitchcock...I would call the movie a horror movie in its day.
