What type of batteries are they, we have connected 6 volt and 12 volt batteries together for years, they were tractor batteries and that type, but if your talking about alkiline batteries you wouldnt gain anything but maybe a little longer battery life

Assuming you wish to prolong the service life of a given 9 Volt product, you could connect the Plus Terminals of two 9 Volt batteries together, and then connect the Negative terminals of those same two batteries together with no
adverse effect on the batteries (They would be in parallel.).
You would gain twice the battery life (device operation time) in a given situation.

Were you to short out two batteries by reverse connecting them together, you would cause a large amount of current to flow out of batteries designed for a minimal current flow normally and something is bound to burn out. This is not a good idea to try for fun because of the acid and chemicals within the batteries can be very harmful to your eyes and skin. Play with something else.

Yes. If two batteries are connected in series as short circuit, they will form18 volt short circuit and chances are that they will explode. If you connect them in parallel ,nothing will happpen
They will form circuit which will supply 9 volts with more current

Depending how you connect them, and the batteries themselves, yes.

Yes, you are shorting them out!

Yes, there is a good chance they will either explode or burst and release the chemicals. It can burn, damage furniture. You can burn your eyes or skin.
